Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japan

Jigokudani Monkey Park which translates as “Valley of Hell” though despite the daunting name, the park is a hell of a lot more like heaven (Jigokudani  is more known as “the snow monkeys park”) The park is located near the city of Nagano (Nagano is situated northwest of Tokyo, Japan), The Monkey Park itself is approximately 45 minutes drive from Nagano followed by a 20 minutes walk from the park’s gate. (about 1.8 kilometers) the track can be icy and slippery {you can rent snow shoes for about 5$ (USD)}.

The park has a main artificial pool, which the monkeys come together for socializing and bathing in the hot water.
The snow monkeys live in large social groups and are used to humans so it is easy to take photos of the monkeys from a very close range.

The Bathing spot is only possible for you if you are apart of a family of monkeys 🙂 but no worries, Shibu Onsen is near by (a charming hot spring town just a 10 minutes drive to the west of Jigokudani park) Shibu Onsen has treasured it’s traditional atmosphere. snuggled in a small valley and by the Yokoyugawa River. makes it a great place for a hot bath, so.. ig you get jealous of the monkeys you know were to head next.

*event though one can get really close to the monkeys – Touching or feeding the snow monkeys at Jigokudani Monkey park is forbidden.

There is a live camera of the snow monkeys (click here)  might be too dark to see – notice that JST (Japan Standard Time) is UTC/GMT +9 hours).
